I was over at my brother’s place for supper last week, and my sixteen year old niece was around for a change.
Normally she is too preoccupied with having a social life to stay in the house and speak to her tedious aged aunt, but this being a school night she was at home. She was working away on line when I arrived.
I believed at first that she was just mucking around on Bebo but it turned out that she was working on layout ideas for the web-site she was constructing for the school project! That made me feel like the world had left me behind.
I decided at that point that I was going to enrol myself in an IT course and at least learn programming basics. If my mum can learn to do SMS messages that are not all in capital letters, I should be able to understand how to compose basic code.

I understand almost nothing about building webpages or programming or things of that kind, so I am a little uncertain over how to get started. I know that it would be pretty hard for me to build a web site myself from scratch, but I am always up for challenges. I know you can buy off-the-shelf packages which apparently help you to construct your own website despite not having any knowledge of programing.
Or that’s the idea anyhow. My mate purchased one a while back. She wasted about 3 days trying to make it do what it was meant to, then gave in and called her son-in-law, who’s in software development outsourcing and is a technology whizz kid.
He had her web-site going in no time.
I realize most folk outsource IT development nowadays.
Having a solid internet profile is extraordinarily important for any company these days, so if you don’t understand what to do regarding IT, it’s a good idea to invest a bit of cash on someone who will.
However nowadays not knowing the way in which to construct a web site is seen rather like not being able to operate a bike. It’s not that you’re obliged to be able to do it, it’s just that most people understand how, and they actually think it a little odd that you don’t.
